The partners of the "openInfra" initiative have the ambition to develop common principles for achieving process integration during the design, construction and maintenance phases of infrastructure development. OpenInfra believes that the development and deployment of appropriate building information models (BIM) is an important enabler for achieving the objectives. Problem

In the construction process of infrastructure, many parties works together to the development of structures such as roads, tunnels, viaducts, etc.. After a design and build phase, the building will be for a long time in a maintain phase. Also, the building becomes part of a larger infrastructure.

Vision Research has shown that the information flow in the building process involves a large sensitivity to error. Clear agreements on how to communicate and collaborate are often lacking. The implications are miscommunication, error recovery, implementation of changes, and so on.

Simultaneously, we see that building information rapidly becomes more complex. This is caused by the introduction of methods such as systems engineering, risk management and asset management, and also the introduction of 3D models.

During the development of a building, many specialized software tools are used for design, analysis, and so on. The information needed to the describe the building in its composition, shape and technical specifications, during the life cycles, is extensive and diverse.

Partners in the construction of infrastructure have a great need to further integrate the process and reducing failures. However, we lack adequate principles and standards that take into account size and diversity of building information and the life cycle of infrastructure.

Ambition

Arrangements for a Building Information model for Infrastructure Arrangements for an exchange format of building information Principles for Information Management Arrangements for organizing the information process and interaction between construction partners

In addition, the following requirements are important:

A BIM for infrastructure should be able to describe its composition, shape and specifications throughout the life cycle

Important aspects of an infrastructure that should be listed in the BIM, include the following: ○ The functions of the building

○ The function fullfillers of the building (spaces and physical objects)

○ Connections between objects

○ Requirements placed on functions, spaces and objects

○ Performances provided by objects

○ The documents relevant to the description of the building

○ An object library containing the classification and technical specifications of type objects

○ Verification of requirements

The core of the BIM should be formed by an object decomposition structure, the description of the building may be by way of documents of various types and formats, such as drawings, calculations, 3D models, and so on. The structure of BIM for infra should be relatively simple. Through the object library definitions of object types can be added. This ensures that the BIM for Infrastructure can be employed flexibly. The experience shows that it is not possible to develop a comprehensive BIM for all purposes and all product types. The BIM for Infrastructure should therefore contain a core model that contains the essentials for process integration. The core should be expandable with plug-ins to meet the specific needs of applications, projects or organizations. In the BIM provisions should be included for change and version control.
